Lucas was born on June 6, 1986, to Jerry and Donna Speidel in Bismarck, ND. He was raised in south Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 2004. Growing up, Lucas loved being active and spent many of his younger years playing hockey. Despite playing a tough sport, he was always gentle at home. His younger sister may have thrown a few playful jabs his way over the years, but Lucas never fought back—showing early on the kind and easygoing nature that people would come to know and love about him.

Lucas spent many years working at Huff Hills Ski Resort, where he served as a manager and helped maintain the trolley. Huff Hills was more than just a job for him—it was a place where his love of snowboarding and the outdoors became part of his everyday life. He built many meaningful friendships there, including with Jim and Pat, whom he often referred to as his “co-parts.”

More recently, Lucas worked at Bismarck Sign Company. If you ever rode around town with him, he would proudly point out the signs he had assembled and welded, leaving his mark all over the community he loved.

Lucas was also a regular at Jack’s Steakhouse—so much so that some joked he practically lived there. It was there that he met his girlfriend, Jasmine, while she was working, and the two quickly formed a special bond.

Lucas had a love for speed and adventure. When he was younger, he enjoyed motorcycles, roller coasters, tubing, skateboarding, four-wheelers, and snowboarding, and that passion for anything fast and fun stayed with him throughout his life. He was a true thrill seeker who loved the rush of adrenaline. Lucas learned to ski when he was about five years old. With little fear, he went up and down the hill on his own, quickly discovering a love for the slopes that would stay with him for the rest of his life.

He also loved being outdoors, whether it was fishing, golfing, or spending time on the ski slopes. Lucas especially looked forward to his annual trips with friends and family. Whether snowboarding in Red Lodge or making a trip to Deadwood, there was always an adventure planned. These trips had been a tradition since he was young and became some of the moments he treasured most with the people he loved.

Lucas also had a creative side. He was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing and had a natural ability to bring his ideas to life on paper.

Family meant everything to Lucas. His godmother, who was also his aunt, Dar, held a very special place in his heart. One of Lucas’s favorite sayings to her was, “I need this Dar,” and she would always find a way to accommodate him. Even as he grew older, he still jokingly said, “I need this Dar,” a phrase that became a cherished and playful tradition between them.

But more than anything, Lucas loved people. He had a natural way of connecting with others and could make friends wherever he went. He loved to dance—anywhere, anytime, with anyone—and his fun-loving spirit made him welcome in every room he entered.

He cherished time with his family and friends and was especially proud of his niece, nephews, and godchildren. Lucas had a big heart and was always there when someone needed him. If you ever asked Lucas for a favor, his answer was almost always the same: “I’ll be right there.” And he meant it—he always showed up.

Lucas is survived by his parents, Jerry and Donna; his sister, Whitney (Noah) Fliginger; his nephews and niece, Roger, June, Roland (his godson), and Rocky; his girlfriend, Jasmine Harter; his grandmother, Wilma Speidel; his godchildren, Ava Sommerfield and Lennon Speidel; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; as well as his Huff Hills family and his Jack’s Steakhouse family, who meant so much to him.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Wilburt Speidel, and his maternal grandparents, Roger and Ann Meland.

Lucas will be remembered for his big heart, adventurous spirit, and the way he showed up for the people he loved. His laughter, kindness, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to Central Dakota Humane Society, 2104 37th St, Mandan, ND 58554.
