Obituary

Lugard Sally (Jacob) Leier

May 1,1932 – October 6, 2026

Lugard was born May 1, 1932, to Valentine and Veronica (Haegele) Jacob on their farm in rural Napoleon, North Dakota. Lugard was the youngest of 8 children and the first generation born in the United States. Lugard grew up on the farmstead and attended a rural public school. She met Joe A Leier at a wedding dance in Napoleon, and they were married October 24, 1951, at St. Phillips Catholic Church in Napoleon. They lived and worked in Edgeley for a short time and then moved to their farm near Braddock. They raised their family of 11 children. Lugard and Joe raised cattle, pigs, and oh so many chickens, farming grains and hay. They harvested garden produce, canned fruits, vegetables, and anything you fit in a jar and stored in the root cellar. Many life skills were taught to their children, including gardening, canning, sewing, baking, building, and repairs of equipment. Then there was family time to fish on the banks of the Missouri River.

Lugard and Joe had lifelong friendships from Braddock and enjoyed hosting card parties for name days and birthdays. Lugard worked for the Braddock School and for Arrow Cleaning Service. She enjoyed traveling around the States, Europe (Germany, Rome, London, France, Switzerland, and Austria), and cruising the Caribbean.

Lugard belonged to a pool and dart league and loved a good card game of Pinochle or Poker. Her joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her fried chicken, monster cookies, caramel rolls, garlic buns, and kuchen were spot on the best.

Lugard’s later years, she remained on the farm with the loving hands of Bob and "My" Lori Leier. She enjoyed word finds, watching daily mass, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Days of Our Lives, and westerns. Lugard loved sitting on her front porch enjoying the sun and was always ready for a day trip to the casino.

January of 2023, Lugard entered Edgewood Village for a winter stay and decided that was a place for her. She made new friends and was loved and cared for by the staff, and her family is so grateful. She passed away on October 6, 2026, at Edgewood Vista.

Lugard is preceded in death by her husband of 35 years Joe, infant twin daughters, Helen Marie and Mary Catherine; son-in-law Frank Enstice III; daughter-in-law Diane (Schuette) Leier, granddaughter Kelsey Vetter, grandson Joshua Moore, 6 sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara & William Fetch, Agatha & Raymond Braun, Theresa & John Wald, Francis Holdorf, Katie & George Bachman, Veronica & Pius Schmidt; brother Michael and Patricia (sister-in-law) Jacob.
