Lyle Laurence Arthaud was born on July 27, 1931, the son of Robert E. And Grace C. (Randall) Arthaud. Lyle’s father was a high school principal and during his youth, the family moved quite often throughout Montana and western North Dakota. Lyle graduated from Williston High School in 1949. It was during high school that Lyle met Genevieve Winter. They were married September 16, 1950, in a double wedding ceremony with Lyle’s brother Robert Arthaud and Barbara Judkins.
Lyle and Gen started their married life in a small two room basement apartment in Bismarck. It was the outbreak of the Korean War and most young men were placed on A1 status to be drafted. Rather than be drafted, Lyle chose to enlist in the Marine Corps. Lyle served on the front lines during the Korean war and was very proud of his military service time. In May of 1951, Lyle was honorably discharged and returned to Williston, where he worked for Coca Cola Bottling Company. Their family started to grow with the additions of Steve, Jerry, and Greg. Lyle changed occupations to work in the Insurance business, and the family moved to Minot for the next 10 years. During this time the family grew with the addition of Kevin and Sue. It was a very busy household during those years with a family growing up! In 1967 the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, living there before returning to North Dakota, settling in the Hebron community in 1969.
Lyle retired after 46 years in the insurance industry. He and Gen continued to make their home in Hebron, where Lyle remained an active member of the community. They lived there until 2019, when they moved to Mandan, and later, in January 2022, to Prairie Point Assisted Living in Bismarck. Following Gen’s passing on June 7, 2023, Lyle eventually moved to the Baptist Home.
Lyle was a man who loved staying active—both with his family and in the community. He was involved at St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Hebron American Legion. Lyle also served as president of the Senior Center and worked part-time as a bus driver for West River. He took great pride in the community of Hebron and helped to make the Hebron Centennial a memorable success. He enjoyed hunting pheasant, duck, and deer, and loved playing cards, especially pinochle. Over the years, he and Gen bowled together in various leagues. Whether tending to his yard or simply spending time outdoors, Lyle found joy in staying busy and contributing wherever he could.
Lyle is survived by his son, Steve (Carol) Arthaud, Fargo, ND and their daughters, Carey Sue (Matt) Hory and Kayla (Tyler) Gylland; son, Jerry (Mary) Arthaud, Chula, MO, and their children, Rachel (Nate) Geiger, Ben (Sarah) Arthaud, Matt (Kara) Arthaud, Elizabeth (Stephen) Garcia, Jonathan (Bethany) Arthaud, Matthew (Lydia) Garcia, Terry (Chelsea) Carr, and Trisha Beck; son, Greg Arthaud, Blooming Prairie, MN, and his children, Donovan (Liah) Rieken, Heather Rieken, Matt (Pam) Miller and Brianna Arthaud; son, Kevin (Kirstin) Arthaud, Bismarck, and their children, Taylor (Megan) Arthaud, Tanner Arthaud (Katie Nikcevich), Kyle Gibson (Lexi Quam), and Nicole (Austin) Muth; daughter, Sue (Steve) Hanna, West Fargo, ND, and their two children, Meghan Hanna (Aaron West) and Brandon Hanna (Megan Wobbema); 25 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and family friend, Therisa Hauser, whose late husband, Jack, was a fellow Marine and long-time friend for over 57 years.
Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; infant son, Randall Arthaud; two daughters-in-law, Karen Arthaud and Lori Arthaud; special brother-and sister-in-law, Bob and Barb Arthaud; sister, Mary Lu Korang; his parents and a special friend Jack Hauser.
