Malvin J. Olson

Malvin J. Olson, Jr. "Mal" was looking forward to celebrating his 100th birthday on September 14. He was just 69 days short of that goal. It’s our privilege to celebrate his day with you. 

A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 14 at St. George Episcopal Church at 11:00. There will be a visitation at the church an hour before the service. 

Mal was born on September 14, 1924 to Malvin O. and Margaret Olson Mal was the oldest of three boys. George and Al preceded him in death. 

Mal was a lifelong Bismarck resident. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1942. As far as we know, he was the last surviving member of his class. 

Mal was a hard worker and worked in several jobs and he was always happy to share stories. He took over Olson’s Service from his father. He operated the service station for many years. 

In 1958, Mal married Virginia Orchard. They were blessed to add two children, Tana and Rick, to their family. 

Mal was a lifelong member of the Bismarck/Mandan Elks and was very active in Scouting. He was instrumental in developing the Heart Butte Scout Reservation at Lake Tschida. 

Mal passed his love of the lake to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Mal on the evening of July 7, 2024. He left behind his wife, Virginia, his children, Tana (Brad) Banker and Rick (Tammy) Olson. He left his grandchildren, Kayla, Heather, Bridget, Marshall and Kylee. He had six great grandchildren, Adalynn, Tayte, Brextyn, Octavian, Quinn and Kade. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers and many beloved family members. 

Mal enjoyed Happy Hour with his family. Please join us after the service at the Elks from 2:00-5:00 for a Happy Hour toast to Mal.
