Obituary

Marian Barbie, 95, Bismarck, passed away on April 27, 2023.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. 

A reception will follow, with interment at Menoken Cemetery.  

Marian was born November 14, 1927, in Bismarck, the second child of Cecil and Nettie (Jenny) Dance and graduated from Bismarck High School and Bismarck Junior College.  Marrying Donald Barbie on July 3, 1948, Marian worked as a legal secretary while Don pursued an engineering degree.  When the family returned to Bismarck, Marian worked in the legal department of Workman’s Compensation then accepted a position as Clerk of Burleigh Country Court.  In 1979, Marian was elected Clerk of District Court. After running unopposed for three more terms, she retired with more than 25 years of service to the court system.

Throughout her life, Marian was a dedicated gardener, bridge player, golfer, and bowler, holding various offices in the Women’s Bowlers and Golfers Associations. 

Marian is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dana and Shirley Barbie, Austin, TX; daughter, Donna Barbie, Ormond Beach, FL; granddaughter, Katrina Schmidt, Las Vegas, NV; and sister, Mrs. Maureen Kershaw, Menoken. 

Marian was preceded in death by her mother and father, Cecil and Jenny Dance; sister, Arlyce Dance; husband, Donald Barbie; brother, Maurice Dance; and life-long friend, Agnes Anderson.
