Marion Alice Haman Schadewald, formerly of Sykeston, ND, died on June 7, 2025, at Edgewood Vista in Bismarck, ND.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 20, 2025, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Sykeston, ND.
Marion was born to Lawrence and Clara (Hoegele Ell) Haman on November 28, 1921, on the family farm near Berwick, ND. She attended grades 1-8 in Berwick, ND, and graduated from high school in Barton, ND, in 1939. After earning her Rural Permit Certificate from Minot State Teachers College, she taught at Barton Rural for 3 years. She then returned to college to earn her Standard degree, and taught in Cando, ND for 2 years. Marion always spoke fondly of her time teaching in rural schools.
In 1944, Marion and Paul G. Schadewald were married at Drew Field in Tampa, FL. After Paul was discharged from the service, they moved to Sydney, ND, and then in 1948 to Sykeston, ND, where Paul worked in GTA elevators. Marion stayed home to raise their 4 children, and in 1965 returned to teaching in Sykeston in the elementary grades. She was able to return to college during the summers, and in 1973 was proud to receive her four-year degree from Mayville State College. Education was her passion, and she spent evenings, weekends, and summers preparing lessons for her classes. She loved her students and always spoke of them with enjoyment and true compassion. She retired from teaching in 1985.
Marion and Paul enjoyed travels to China, Japan, Europe, Hawaii, and to many American Legion conventions throughout the US. After Paul died in 1998, Marion remained in Sykeston until 2006, when she moved to Edgewood Vista in Bismarck, ND.
Although talented in many areas, sewing was Marion’s favorite pastime. She made many of her own and her children’s clothes, and sewed multitudes of Barbie doll clothes—all on a treadle sewing machine. Later she moved on to quilts and an electric machine. Her years at Edgewood were filled with hours spent cutting blocks and creating hundreds of denim quilts, baby blankets, and potholders. Macular degeneration made her work a challenge, but she persevered with her sewing until age 96. Her handiwork may be her most lasting legacy: her quilts, potholders, and rag rugs never seem to wear out, and since there are hundreds of them out in the world, it’s sure that she will be remembered for a long, long time. Never one to rest, she also gardened at Edgewood, planting tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkins, and squash in the landscaping area outside her apartment. She remained mentally sharp to the end, still able to give us tax advice, and beat us at rummy as long as she had her vision.
Marion is survived by four children: Paul Timm (Linda) Schadewald of Bismarck, ND; Kathleen (Thomas) Uvaas of Fergus Falls, MN; Lorrel (Terry) Peterson of Brainerd, MN; and Mark (Laura) Schadewald of Alexandria, MN; ten grandchildren: Trina Crowe, Nathan Schadewald, Kayley Peacock, John Schadewald, Ashley Macy, Jacob Lachelt, Amy Wilson, Jenna Holtz, Erin Kirkpatrick, Isaac Schadewald, eleven great-grandchildren, and two of her eight siblings: Anna Haman, and Emilie Albrecht.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, her parents, and six siblings: Phillip Ell, Stefina Schafer, Christine Forbes, Helen Knoll, Henry Haman, and Andrew Haman.
Marion’s family is thankful for the excellent, kind and compassionate care given to her by the staff at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living and CaringEdge Hospice.
