Obituary

Martin Rivinius, 102, passed away April 14, 2026.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, April 20, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior.

Burial will be held at 2 PM at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Martin was born July 22, 1923, to Eduard and Christina (Henne) Rivinius in the Coleharbor area. He attended country school and graduated from Coleharbor High School in 1941. Martin worked in his father’s gas station until entering the Army. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of T/Sgt. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, and the Victory Medal.

He married LaVerne Winn in Bismarck on September 30, 1946. They had three children, Karen, James, and Deborah, and they celebrated 79 years together last fall.

Martin was employed with Nash Finch Company for five years. He then joined the Caterpillar dealership and was employed with them for 35 years. He retired in 1985 after 21 years of employment with Butler Machinery.

Martin enjoyed bowling, gardening, yard work, fishing, and wood crafts. LaVerne and he went on senior bus tours through the East and Southern states. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school activities. He was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church and the Elks.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; children, Karen (Fred) Schmidt of Bismarck, ND, James (Karen Werner) Rivinius of Federal Way, WA, and Deborah (Dan) Jackson of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Jeremy (Brooke) Schmidt, Jason (Ellie) Schmidt, Darren (April) Schmidt, Kacie (Blair) Miller, and Kayla (Mark) Olson; great-grandchildren, Bryn, Luke, Will Schmidt; Huck, Heath Schmidt; Bode, Jade Schmidt; Wyatt Miller; Martin, Mike Olson; and many nieces, nephews, and several cousins.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Eduard and Christina (Henne) Rivinius; brother, Ben (Evelyn) Rivinius; and sisters, Esther (Herb) Christman, Erna (Homer) Zimmerman, and Edna (Robert) Becker.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McCabe Methodist Church, Great Plains Food Bank, Cancer Center, or the charity of your choice.
