Mary B. Buchholz was born to Sylvester “Wes” Mans and Rosemary (Cramer) Mans on May 2, 1944. Sadly, Mary’s infant sister, Carol Jene and her mother, both passed away, just a few days apart, when Mary was 2 years old.
When Mary was 5 ½ years old, her life was blessed when her father married Margaret Dehling. Margaret became “Mom”, for the next 40 years until Margaret’s passing in 1990. With this union, Mary proudly became “Big Sis”, when her brother Phil and sister Kathy, were born. A name her sister Kathy still calls her.
Mary was raised and educated in Mankato, MN, earning a degree in Education from the University of Minnesota.
Mary married Jerome Brincks in 1967. Together, they had two sons, Douglas Edward and Joseph Sylvester. They later divorced.
With encouragement from her close friend, JoAnn Braun, Mary accepted a teaching position, in Wing, ND. She and her sons made their way to Wing, settling in to make it their home. Through mutual friends, she was introduced to Orvin Buchholz of Tuttle. Orvin and Mary were married on Nov. 10, 1981. Mary and the boys joined Orvin on the farm, where Mary also became “Ma” to four step-daughters.
Mary dedicated 22 years of her life, to growing the minds of young people. Fondly known as “Mrs. B” she first taught elementary grades, then shifted into Special Education, for the last few years of her teaching career. She also worked as a substitute, throughout the neighboring communities, until her retirement. She truly loved her students and took pride in watching them grow and succeed as adults. Although she taught at the elementary level, she received many graduation announcements, wedding invitations and Christmas cards from her former students. She was a true nurturer and definitely created an everlasting bond.
Throughout the years, Mary has worn many hats: school teacher, school bus driver, bartender, first responder for both Wing Rural Ambulance and Kidder County Rural Ambulance, CNA at the Golden Manor, home healthcare provider for Mary Subart, pilot car driver for Buchholz Trucking, and #1 dishwasher for Tim Krein, at the Town Café, in Tuttle!
Mary was an avid reader, always carrying a book in her purse. She loved to put jigsaw puzzles together, working on them for hours at a time. She loved music, especially singing in the local church and community choirs, enjoying all styles of music. Moose Creek Symphony, Prairie Harmony Singers and the Dakota Rangers were three of her favorite groups. Mary truly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To quote, “What’s not to love about those cherubs?”
Mary loved her community and it is with 100% certainty, her community loved her! She truly enjoyed having adventures and has made so many loving friends, along the way. Far too many to list! When health issues started to take their toll, Mary moved to the Wentz Living Center in Napoleon, ND. She absolutely loved the staff and facility and the staff and residence adored her! We as a family are so very grateful for the amazing love and care over these past three years.
Throughout the years, Mary met many people and left a lasting impression. Everyone knew that Mary B. had her own “clock” and marched to the beat of her own drum! At times, she could definitely be challenging, but with her infectious laugh and ability to turn any sentence into an off-key tune, it was easily forgiven. Her “Happy Birthday” phone calls are something you would never forget, if you were so blessed to receive one.
Mary will be deeply missed by her sons: Doug (Rhonda) Brincks-Kasson, MN, and Joe (Nicole) Brincks-Mandan, ND; stepdaughters, Valarie Buchholz-Steele, ND, Deanna (Chad) Muth, Bismarck, ND, Christina Buchholz-Bismarck, ND, Mary (Gary) Brown-Hazelton, ND; sister, Kathy (Steve) Solko-Manternach – Nevada, IA; sister-in-law: Aggie (Richard) Stecher, Glendive, MT; 11 grandchildren, Mateena (Matt) Heaton, Bismarck ND, Chasity (Jacob) Luptak, Bismarck ND, Anthony (Nikki) Stockert, Mandan ND, Alexis Stockert, Bismarck ND, Myranda (Jesse) Feist-McIntosh, SD, Nathan Muth, Mandan ND, Owen and Emline Brincks, Grand Forks, ND, Sierra and Maddy Becker, Bismarck ND, and Abby (Christian) Ray, Albion, IL; 19 great-grandchildren, Rylee, Kodee and Jake Heaton, Chaylynn Scherr, Jaden and AraBella Luptak, Hadley and Haystin Stockert, Aubrey Whitebull, Aiden and Andre West, Landry, Harrison, Emmeric, and Ayla Elmer, Thad, Gatlen and Karsyn Feist, and Cohen Ray; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Waiting with open arms in Heaven is her loving husband of 42 years, Orvin; her parents, Rosemary (Cramer) Mans, Sylvester “Wes” and Margaret (Dehling) Mans; infant sister, Carol Jene; brother, Phillip Mans; infant grandson, Mathew Stockert; and several other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be sent to the Make a Wish Foundation or English Lutheran Church, Tuttle.
