Mary Jane Herr

August 17, 1930 — April 29, 2024

Bismarck

Mary Jane Herr, 93, passed away peacefully in her home at Edgewood Village Bismarck on Monday, April 29, 2024.

At Mary Jane's request, there will be no services. Cremation has taken place.

Interment in the McClusky Cemetery will follow at a later date.

Mary Jane was born the third of four children, on August 17, 1930, to A. N. Nichols and Gladys R. Nichols in Denhoff, ND. There she met and married Robert Herr in a double ceremony with her sister, Beverly, and her betrothed. When Mary Jane and Robert were stationed in Germany during Robert's career in the United States Air Force, they welcomed their daughter, Roberta, into their family. Over the years, Mary Jane and Robert also added several rescue dogs to their family, as strong supporters of local animal shelters.

Like her mother, Mary Jane loved flowers and bird-watching and was a quintessential homemaker, a talented seamstress and a dedicated writer. She was a well-read and articulate woman with a disarmingly dry sense of humor. Mary Jane and Robert were avid walkers, always accompanied by one of their beloved dogs. After Robert passed away in 2009, Mary Jane joined the Edgewood Village community with her companion, Doggie, a friendly, little, gray mixed-breed pup. Doggie was a humble celebrity, loved by residents and staff alike at Edgewood.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by Robert, her husband, and their daughter, Roberta Gregor; her parents; her brother, Charles Nichols; and her younger sister, Ardelle Wohlenhaus.

She is survived by her older sister, Beverly Solberg; many nieces and nephews; members of Robert's family; her Edgewood family; and long-time friends.

We are grateful for the kind and loving care which Mary Jane received from each of her caregivers during her many years at Edgewood, and also from those at CHI Health at Home and Hospice.
