Obituary

MaryEllen (Terry) Turcotte passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her husband, Dick, and her daughters, Mary Jo and Patty.

A family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.

MaryEllen was born on November 19, 1934, in Sheyenne, ND, to Cyril and Margaret Terry. The tragic loss of her parents in a car accident when she was 18 instilled in her a resilience and self-reliance that would define the rest of her life. MaryEllen was formidable — hardworking, outgoing, faithful, and always putting her family first. She was a devoted mother to all four of her children: Mary Jo, Patty, Terry, and Scott.

MaryEllen married her lifelong companion, Dick Turcotte, on April 17, 1954. Theirs was a life filled with adventure, fun, and deep family connection. They spent their early years together in Bemidji, MN, where they began raising their family. They later returned to New Rockford, ND, where they purchased and operated the Busy Bee general store. MaryEllen was an excellent business owner, keeping everything orderly, fair, and efficient — though she always found time to let her grandchildren sneak some bulk chocolate from behind the counter.

MaryEllen and Dick stayed very active, traveling often and attending many of their grandchildren’s events.

After retiring, they moved to Minnesota, where they enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow and attending Minnesota Twins and Vikings games. During this time, MaryEllen worked for many years as a beloved lunch lady in Belle Plaine, Minnesota. She truly loved the school children she served. After true retirement they made Chanhassen, MN their home where they lived for many years before eventually moving to Bismarck, ND.

MaryEllen always kept busy playing card games, socializing, and caring for others. She took on the role of caregiver for many members of her family — a role that beautifully demonstrated her selflessness, strength, and compassion.

MaryEllen was preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Terry and Scott Turcotte; her grandson, Dylan Turcotte; and her son-in-law, David Laber.

She leaves behind her husband of 71 years, Dick; her daughters, Mary Jo Turcotte and Patty Laber; her daughters-in-law, Jewel and Erin Turcotte; her son-in-law, Lan Grindheim; as well as 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren who will continue to carry her love forward.
