Mavis Houghton

Mavis Marie Houghton passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at the Missouri Slope Care Center in Bismarck, ND. 

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 7, 2025, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 318 2nd St. SW, Steele, ND. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Steele, ND.

Mavis was born on September 1, 1928, in Sanger, ND to Christ and Lena Wentz. She completed eight grade and moved with her parents to a farm south of Steele, ND. She married Harry Houghton on September 8, 1946. They farmed south of Steele until 1969 and then moved into Steele when Harry retired. Harry passed away in 1983 and Mavis continued to live in Steele. She retired after over 20 years working at the Golden Manor Nursing Home.

Mavis loved crafts, crocheting, quilting, and knitting. Her greatest enjoyment came from playing cards of any kind. She loved game shows, baking, and cooking. She also loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their sporting events.

Mavis leaves behind her children: Duane (Marley) Houghton, Doug (Linda) Houghton, Deb (Kenny) Harter, Denise (Dean) Stolz, and Del (Mundi) Houghton. She was a grandmother to 13 and great grandmother to 24. She is also survived by her sister, Jeanette Holzer; and brother, Earl Wentz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, his parents, her parents, two sisters, one brother, and great grandson, Brett.
