Maynard was born on May 4, 1934, to Oliver and Evelyn Dahl in McIntosh, SD. He grew up on the family farm where he worked hard with his sister, Sharon, and brothers Fred, Laverne, and John. He had fond memories of time spent farming and ranching with the family in both good and hard times. He brought laughter and compassion into the world. Maynard went on to graduate from McIntosh High School in 1952. After graduating from high school, Maynard chose to pursue a degree in Education from Valley City State Teachers College and his Master’s at UND.

In 1957, he married Joan Kruger and the two started a life together that would last for 68 years. This life included five children, Dawn Penrose, John (Vonda), Denise (Dennis) Lowman, Mara (Mark) Fischer, and Jason (Allegra).

Maynard taught school in Grand Forks, ND, and Fertile, MN. He then came to Bismarck, where he became an Elementary School Principal and continued to show compassion, fun, and laughter with the staff and students at Highland Acres, Roosevelt, Riverside, Richolt, Pioneer, and Robert Miller Elementary Schools. He was found many times on the playground with the kids playing ball or even jumping rope.

He and Joan were involved with getting education into homes through selling World Book Encyclopedias and he was active teaching the Dale Carnegie program for many years.

He was a dedicated Boy Scout leader while his sons were growing up. In his retirement years you would find him early in the morning at McDonald’s coffee time with the guys.

Maynard was a dedicated dad to each of his children, raising all five of them to go on to accomplish great things. He demonstrated his love by cooking, building special projects in the garage, gardening, hunting, scout leader, attending concerts, sporting and scouting events, and being involved at church. Family was important and why he chose to spend his time with the family doing projects, camping, swimming & snowmobiling together, and so much more. He loved being a grandparent to all his little ones! He built a beautiful legacy of love and memories with his family.

Maynard was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Laverne and Fred; and in-laws, John and Otillia Kruger, Alvin Herbel, Bernetta Nelson, and Helen Dahl.

He is survived by his wife; his five children; their spouses; 17 grandchildren, April, Amber, Trevor, Ryan, Cody, Hannah, Whitney, Lindsay, Danielle, Zachary, McKenzie, Alexandra, Andrew, Adam, Grace, Isaac and Elizabeth, and their spouses. His legacy includes 18 great grandchildren: Olivia, Braxton, Everett, Tucker, Parker, Sawyer, Eloise, Wilder, Maisie, Amelia, Edwin, Taryn, Marissa, Archer, Halston, Mia, Hazel, Wilhemina, Jack and Will. He is also survived by sister, Sharon Herbel (Denver CO); and brother John (Sandy) Dahl (Belgrade, MT); and numerous nieces and nephews.
