Nancy was born on August 5, 1951, in Bismarck, the daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Ollenburger) Backman. The family lived on a farm near Wilton until Nancy’s father passed away in a farm accident. They then moved to Bismarck, where Nancy started at Bismarck High School. After graduating, she worked several different jobs as an administrative assistant eventually getting her dream job at Northern Energy. Where she worked for them through three generations until her retirement.
Family was important to Nancy. In her younger years, Nancy and her sister Janet roomed together and eventually purchased a mobile home together. Nancy loved the sun. She would often take her nephews and niece to McDowell Dam to spend time with them so she could bask in the sun. She loved the warmth of the sun so much that she eventually purchased her own tanning bed. Many memories were made throughout the years.
She was once married and through this relationship she grew to love going to auction sales and collecting antiques. Nancy’s bravery and unwavering optimism while battling cancer were an inspiration to us all. Although she may not have wished for that part of her story to define her, it showcased her incredible strength and fighting spirit.
She is survived by her two sisters, Kaye (Jim) Dalbec, Olathe, KS and Janet Garvin, Bismarck; Nephew, Steven (Nancy) Dalbec and their daughter MacKenzie; niece, Tammy (Brad) Bodine and their children Brandon and Leah; nephew, Jason (Kent James) Dalbec; nephew, Travis (Robyn) Backman and their children, Krystal, Derryck and Jordyn and their grandchildren, Stella and Iroh; nephew, Mike (Lori) Backman and their daughter Jazmynn.
