Obituary

Otillia L. (Sturn) Croteau of Bismarck, ND, 93, passed away on March 21, 2026, at Sanford Medical Center with her family lovingly by her side.

Born on February 1, 1933, and raised on a farm near St. Anthony, ND, Otillia was a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, creativity, and gregarious, outgoing nature. She possessed an uncanny ability to connect with just about anyone.

Otillia had the biggest heart and a beautiful smile. She was fearless, independent, yet empathetic and incredibly compassionate. She loved to read and excelled at cross-stitching, crocheting, and other crafts. Despite having rheumatoid arthritis, she took pride in creating beautiful quilts and making sure everyone was well fed.

Otillia graduated from North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton, ND. She went on to work for the State of North Dakota and Basin Electric, retiring in 1995.

While attending NDSCS, Otillia met the love of her life, James. They were married in June 1957. Over the course of their nearly 69 years of marriage, they raised three children. Otillia was devoted to her family and cherished watching her sons and grandchildren grow up.

She is survived by her husband, James; three sons, James Croteau, Bismarck, ND, Tobias “Toby” (Cindy) Croteau, Mandan, ND, and Paul Croteau (Debbie Friez), Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Sarah Croteau, Stanley, ND, and Jim Croteau, Arizona; and her sister, Mary Jane Trusty, Nebraska. She also leaves behind her dear friend, Kari Stromme, Bismarck, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Otillia was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael; her parents; her brother, Anton Sturn; and her sister, Elaine Seeberger.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 520 Raymond St, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E Divide Ave, Bismarck. A rosary/vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Burial will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
