Obituary

Patrick (Pat) Conmy passed away on October 7, 2026 after 92 years of laughter, music, family, friends, and a life well lived. He was born on January 5, 1934, in Fargo, North Dakota, the third son of J.F.X. and Marcella Conmy. He graduated from Shanley High School, Class of 1951; Harvard College, Class of 1955; and Georgetown University Law Center in 1959. While attending late-afternoon classes at law school, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor. He was admitted to the bars of Virginia and North Dakota in 1959.

Josephine Keller became his bride in Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1953. Six children followed. Twins Patrick and Michael were born in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Marcie and Stephen were born in Alexandria, Virginia; and Tim and Mary were born in Bismarck, North Dakota. He began his private law practice in Bismarck with his father and Joe Donahue and continued in various partner combinations from 1959 to 1985.

He was elected to the Bismarck City Commission and served for eight years, with responsibility for the Police and Fire portfolios. During this period, he emceed many local and state Miss North Dakota pageants, sang with a number of local organizations, appeared in community theater productions, and performed with the Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus. He was once overheard to say, “I would love to have been able to earn a living in musical theater, but unfortunately, talent was required.” He also sang with the Lake Havasu Community Choir and several church choirs. He served as President of the North Dakota State Bar Association from 1971 to 1972.

He served five terms in the North Dakota House of Representatives, representing District 47, and twice served as chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He was appointed to the Federal Judiciary by President Reagan in 1985 and became an inactive Senior Judge in 2014, giving credence to the saying, “Crime does not pay nearly as well as politics.”

Summers, when possible, found him perched on his riding lawn mower at Lake Tschida or trying to keep the various toys running while reading every book in sight. Winters were spent in Lake Havasu, Arizona, for many years with Bismarck friends and new Arizona friends.

Pat is survived by his brother, James Conmy, and family; his six children, Patrick (Lynn) Conmy, Michael Conmy, Marcie Conmy, Stephen (Nancy) Conmy, Tim (Joann) Conmy, and Mary (Jon) Adams; 15 grandchildren, Laura (Jeff) Kelley, Tim (Jamie) Krous, Jason Krous, Cory Conmy, Monta Rae (Tom) Zimmerle, Michaela (Zachary) Huntington, Marissa (John) Fisher, Dalton (Emily) Adams, Ian (Katherine) Adams, Whitney (Bill) Anderson, Brianna (Zachary) Sherritt, Sarah Conmy, Sean Conmy, Jey Weisgerber, and Rebecca Weisgerber; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many members of his extended family.

Pat was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; brothers, Dr. Walsh Conmy and Dr. Michael Conmy; sister, Ellen Cornwell; and daughter-in-law, Teena Conmy, along with other members of his extended family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Thursday, October 15, at Church of Corpus Christi, 1919 N 2nd St., Bismarck, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5:30-6:30 PM on Wednesday, October 14, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave. A Vigil service will begin at 6:30PM.
