Pete was born on October 29, 1929, ten miles southwest of Napoleon, ND, the fourth of fourteen children born to Theresia (Kambeitz) and Roney Glatt. He attended rural school and from an early age, learned the value of hard work on the family farm – lessons that would shape his entire life.

Pete met Caroline in Napoleon, ND while roller skating. On October 18, 1954, Pete married the love of his life, Caroline, daughter of Clara (Schmidt) and Joseph Leier, at St. Boniface Catholic Church near Kintyre. Together they built a life grounded in faith, family and farming. They were blessed with eight children: Steven, Robert, Debra, Ronald, Richard, Sandra, Shelly, and Shannon.

Pete and Caroline farmed south of Tappen before moving in 1958 to Crown Hill/Pleasant Hill Township, six and a half miles southwest of Steele. There they established the farm that would remain their home for 65 years. They milked cows, raised hogs and feeder cattle and farmed grain. The work was demanding and the years were sometimes lean, but Pete often said how fortunate they were to make their living on the land and raise their family there. In 2024, they moved to Bismarck for extended care, carrying with them a lifetime of memories from the farm they loved.

He proudly served in the US Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War, stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana, earning the rank of Corporal. He remained deeply proud of his military service and was honored to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2016 with son Ron accompanying him.

Pete and Caroline retired from active farming in 1994, though “retirement” simply meant a slower pace. They enjoyed visiting family and friends, attending cattle sales and auctions, playing pinochle, dancing and the occasional trip to the casino. Pete found great contentment in caring for the farmyard, watching cattle in the corral, taking drives through the countryside, and checking on the crops. He loved eating sweets and Caroline’s kitchen was his favorite restaurant. He was a staunch Democrat who loved arguing politics. Once off the farm he continued to follow the grain and cattle markets, the price of farmland and oil. He didn’t golf, hunt or seek public office – his calling was tending the land, providing for his family and staying informed about the world around him. His steady presence, quiet strength, and deep love for his family will be remembered always.

Pete was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish, the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

Pete is survived by his wife, Caroline; his children Steven (Chris), Robert, Debra (Terry) Sando, Ronald, Richard (Martha), Sandra (Myron) Dewald, Shelly (Brian) Sperle, and Shannon (Jason) Hager; Grandchildren Nicholas (Sadie), Sarah, Kandi, Michael (Chrissy), Travis (Amanda) Sando, Brook (Steve) Weber, Stacey (Matt) Bedore, Peter, James (Hillary), Joseph (Matt), John, Drew Sperle, Sydnee Sperle, Jared Hager, and Kendra Hager; Great-grandchildren Dreyvn, Taylynn, Alexis, Caden, Kira, Brynlee, Molly, Dean, Vivian, Norah, Lily and Elle. Pete is also survived by siblings Tony, Eugene (Rita), Betty McLeish, and Margie (Mark) Marshall and in-laws Johanna Glatt, Alvina Glatt, Pam Glatt, Martin (Maggie) Leier, Christine Schwatzenberger, Lorraine (Andy) Piatz, and Larry (Mary Ann) Leier; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, Jim, and Johnny and sisters and brothers-in-law Maggie (Carl) Wentz, Marcella (Julius) Leier, Lorraine (Pete) Schneider, Helen (Willie) Wangler, Eleanor (Vince) Magrum, Bernie Wagner, Stephen McLeish and sister-in-law JoAnne Glatt.
