Philip C. Schaff, 93, died October 13, 2017, in Mandan, from heart failure. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Church of St. Joseph’s, 108 3rd Street NE, Mandan, with Rev. Shane Campbell officiating. Burial will be held at Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Tuesday October 17, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 East Divide Avenue, Bismarck, where a rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm. Philip was born on October 28, 1923, to Christ Schaff and Antonia Vocht in Solen, ND. He was raised and educated in Solen, ND. He married Eva Hoff on January 16, 1945 in Flasher, ND. He farmed the family homestead eight miles north of Solen until moving to Mandan in 1980. In 1963 he became an agent for Morton and Oliver insurance company for 24 years. He was elected to the Board of Directors and also became an adjuster. He was an usher at St. Joe’s and a Eucharist minister for over 20 years; he was a school board member for Ambulance Butte for many years; he belonged to Sacred Heart Verein along with Odense, Fallon, St. Anthony and belonged to many card clubs. Philip played pinochle his entire life. He enjoyed German meals especially cheese buttons, borscht, ram noodles and schoop noodles. Apple pie was his favorite. Philip enjoyed fishing and many vacations with travels to Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Alaska, Mexico, and many places in the U.S. his specialty was making homemade country style sausage, summer sausage, blood sausage, and liver sausage for many years for family and friends. Philip will be deeply missed by his children, daughters, Judy Haider, Solen and Linda Martin, Helena, MT; sons, Roger (Julie) Schaff, Bolingbrook, IL and James (Jeanette) Schaff, New Salem; nine grand-children and nine great-grand-children; sister Katherine Combs and brother Christ (Elenore) Schaff. Philip was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; his parents; grandchild Roger Jr.; brothers Frank (Mary), Pete (Rose), Steve (Madalene); Sisters, Margaret Schaff, Peggy (Joe) Zent, Ida (Frank) Kuntz, Helen (George) Gerhardt; brother-in-law Leonard Combs and son-in-law John Haider.
