Phyllis (Schoumaker) Cusey, 82, Steele, passed away on Jan. 8, 2021 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. She was born to John and Mildred Schoumaker on a farm near Chaseley on Aug. 5, 1938.   Her dad died when she was two years old.  Phyllis lived with her mom for a while and was eventually raised by her brothers and sisters in rural North Dakota.  Phyllis graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1957. 

Phyllis married Howard Cusey on Sept. 14, 1958.   They lived in several states, including Montana and Minnesota before settling in North Dakota.  Five children were born to this union, Lisa, Myron, Brent, James and Keith. 

Throughout Phyllis’ life being a wife, homemaker and mom were her most important jobs.  She also waitressed and ran a lunch counter in the Litchville Bowling Alley and worked at Golden Manor Nursing Home in Steele.  She was a people person and made friends with everyone.  She loved all kinds of crafts, gardening and cooking.  She belonged to Ladies Aid, UMW and American Legion Auxiliary. 

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Howard; children, Lisa (Jon) Denny, Myron (Erica) Cusey, Brent (Tamara) Cusey, James (Meredith) Cusey and Keith (Jenn) Cusey; grandchildren, Andrea (Johnathan) Stone, Nick (Candace) Denny, Amber (Derrick) Nelson, Austin, Steven, Joel, Ashlyn, Arianna, Kolby, Kaycea and Jacob; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jane Schaubert. 

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday Jan. 15 at the Steele United Methodist Church, Steele. There will be social distancing with space between the pews. A service livestream will be available on the funeral home’s website.

Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.
