Phyllis was born on August 24, 1933, and lived on a farm northwest of Napoleon, ND. There she grew and learned to milk cows. She decided early on that the only way out of the milking parlor was education. After graduating from Napoleon High School in 1950, she moved to Bismarck to attend St. Alexius School of Nursing. Her teachers were the Benedictine Sisters who she felt were instrumental in her love for nursing. She graduated in 1953. She began her nursing career in Bismarck at St. Alexius and it was during this time she met and married Ervin Roemmich on July 29, 1955. She put her career on hold to raise their family. They moved to Billings and later return to Bismarck where Ervin and Phyl started several businesses. She was an active part of these endeavors. Phyllis continued to care for their family and ultimately returned to nursing. After she retired, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and doing volunteer work.
Phyllis had high standards in life that she passed to her family:
Through faith all things are possible with God … including going to Mass by snowmobile in a blizzard.
Phyllis is survived by her four children, Kathy (Kevin) Seidel of Bismarck, ND; Bruce Roemmich of Florida; Jane (Lee) Bertsch of Pick City, ND; and Lynn (Glenn) Mitzel of West Fargo, ND. She has four grandchildren, Cole Bertsch of Mandan, ND; Jennifer (Jake) Thorud of McHenry, IL; JD (Angie) Seidel of Bismarck, ND; and Joslin Seidel of Boca Raton, FL. She has three great granddaughters, Myla, Rylee, and Hadley. She is survived by two sisters and a brother, Marion (Dwayne) Thiel of Bismarck, ND; Sandra (Rick) Harris of Anderson Island, WA; and Bernard Marquart of Napoleon, ND in addition to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Ervin and one granddaughter, Lacey Seidel. She was also preceded by her parents Bernard and Clementine (Kuhn) Marquart, three sisters and three brothers-in-laws Betty (Peter) Sperle; Marjorie (Jesse) Jackson; Janet (Richard) Scholl.
