Richard “Rich” Will, 58, passed away on August 9, 2026, at CHI, with his family by his side, following a short battle with cancer.

Rich was born September 18, 1967, in Minot, North Dakota, to Thomas and Beverly Will. Music found him early in life. At about three years old, he picked up Dad’s guitar, and he pretty much never put it down. He had an amazing voice and, beginning in 1984, was the lead vocalist for the local band Katz. He also wrote lyrics and loved nothing more than getting together with the guys to jam.

Music was simply part of who he was. He was always in awe of Uncle Scott’s record collection. He loved finding music, listening to music, playing music, and sharing music. It was with him throughout his life and, fittingly, right up until the end.

Rich also loved food. He was a true foodie before that was even a thing. He could come up with some pretty wild creations in the kitchen, sometimes leaving behind an even wilder mess. And then there were the onions. Rich would pick onions out of just about everything, only to order onion rings with his meal every time he went out to eat. That was just Rich.

He loved fishing, jamming with the guys, good food, good music, and doing things his own way. He was smart, funny, kind, and just a little bit different—in the best possible way. He had the soul of a gypsy and the smile of a lifetime.

Rich’s battle with health issues and cancer was short, but he faced the end the way he lived his life: on his own terms. In his final days, he listened to his music, tapped his feet, and played air drums. Even then, the music was still there.

Rich is survived by his son, Richard Will; his sisters, Kristine (Jamie) Vollmer, Melissa (Rick) Vranicar, and Lisa (Bob) Schobinger; and his niece, Kristen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Beverly Will, and his grandparents.

Rich was one of a kind. He leaves behind music, stories, laughter, memories, and a lot of things his family will probably never look at the same way again. We will miss his voice, his smile, his humor, his stubborn streak, his creativity, and all the little things that made him Rich.

We believe there’s a guitar in his hands, the music is playing, and the beat goes on.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 23, 2026, from 5:00–8:00 p.m. at Sertoma Park, Shelter 8. Final burial will be at Red Lake Community Cemetery in Burnstad, North Dakota.
