Obituary

Robert “Rob” “Schpeck” Schmidt, 74, passed away on June 15, 2026.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck, ND. Visitation will begin one hour prior.

Burial will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, at Menoken Cemetery, Menoken.

Rob was born on January 19, 1952, at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND to Steve and Catherine (Neigum) Schmidt. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1971 and married Debi Gabel, on November 20, 1981. Together they shared 43 years of marriage until Debi’s passing in March 2024.

Rob worked throughout his life at Auto Dine, McDonald's, Dakota Sand & Gravel, and Saks News, where he delivered magazines for many years before retiring. To those who knew him, Rob was defined by his incredibly kind heart and a constant willingness to help others; friends and neighbors often described him as truly having a heart of gold. In his younger years, he would do absolutely anything for anybody, but he also knew how to have a good time. He loved a great party and was famous among his friends for throwing legendary keggers in his parents’ basement.

Rob enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting with his cousins, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He was a devoted dog lover and proud “Dog Dad,” always having at least one canine companion by his side. He also had a fondness for Ford vehicles, especially his green pickup and an old red-and-white truck. Family and friends will remember his fun-loving spirit and the gatherings he enjoyed sharing with those he loved.

Rob was preceded in death by his wife (Debi); brothers, Sebastian and Randy Schmidt; parents, Steve and Catherine (Neigum) Schmidt; niece, Danyle Ellwein; brothers-in-law, Aaron Vedquam and Jeff Diede; and parents-in-law, Orville and Berniece Gabel.

He is survived by four sisters, Sharon Schmidt (Jake Sauter), Sandy (Al) Doffee, Sheila Diede, and Steph (Shawn) Mittlestadt; brother, Ronnie Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Cindy (Stan) Meidinger and Lois (Damon) Mills; and brother-in-law, Bill (Gerlynn) Gabel; and many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great great-nieces and nephews; and special cousins and friends.
