Eastgate Funeral Service
5:00 - 6:00 pm (Central time)
Dr. Robert "Bob" Kenneth Scarlett, of Bismarck, North Dakota, departed this life on Wednesday, June 25th of pancreatic cancer. He passed away peacefully with his devoted wife, Kathleen Schaan, by his side, leaving behind a profound legacy among his family, friends, and the many patients he served.
Born on December 16, 1943, in Eston, Saskatchewan, Bob developed a lifelong passion for the natural world during his youth. He earned his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1968, subsequently practicing general medicine for five years in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. He later relocated to Calgary, Alberta, to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Foothills Hospital. During this period, he was married to Sharon Scarlett (Cole), and they were the parents of three children: James, Kim, and Randy. Following a brief tenure in Miles City, Montana, the family settled in Bismarck, North Dakota, where Bob joined the Mid Dakota Clinic in 1980. In 1988, he wed Kathy Schaan, welcoming her daughter, Niki, into the family.
An accomplished outdoorsman, Bob found immense fulfillment in hunting, angling, and wilderness exploration. He was most content when immersed in nature, whether at a hunting camp, fishing or navigating precariously close to the edge of a cliff to point out wildlife. His adventurous spirit and numerous excursions provided a wealth of cherished stories that his family and friends will continue to recount for generations. He made many friends while wintering in Lake Havasu, Arizona, and loved to meet up for coffee and talk about the big fish that always seemed to get away. His biggest love besides his family, was his cherished dog Bella. She would accompany him everywhere, including fishing on the boat, bike rides, and long walks. It was a rare day to ever see them apart.
Bob is survived by his wife, Kathy Schaan; his children, James, Kim (Jerome), and Niki (Nick); seven grandchildren, Madeline, Christian, Cameron, Sydney (Gabe) Olivia, Auston (Mckenzie), and Zachary; and his great-grandson, Jesse. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia (Bill) and Linda as well as sisters-in-law Liane (Daryl), Lyni (Dave), Patricia (Nader), Margaret, and brother-in-law Phil (Lynn).
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Helen; his son Randy; his sister Marjorie; and his brother, Ed.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, July 1st at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, starting at 5pm with a time for sharing starting at 6pm. All are welcome to attend.
