Bismarck

Rose Mary “Rosie” Horning, 86, passed away on October 6, 2023 at CHI St. Alexius Hospital, in Bismarck after a brief illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, October 12 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 1321 Braman Ave, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a vigil service beginning at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, October 11 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E. Divide Ave, Bismarck.

Burial will take place following the funeral reception, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bismarck.

Rosie was born on April 8, 1937, to Christ and Rose (Leingang) Reisenauer. She attended Catholic Boarding School in St. Anthony, ND through the 8th grade. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck in 1955.

Following graduation, Rosie started her career with the ND State Health Department and worked there until her retirement. Rosie married Henry C. Horning on October 22, 1958. They made their home in Bismarck where they raised three children. Henry and Rosie were married for 60 years, before Henry passed away in 2019.

In 1965, Rosie contracted (Rubella) German Measles. Her son James was born Blind and Deaf in February 1966, as a result. There were no vaccines for Measles at that time. Together with other Rubella parents, a group of for North Dakota Rubella parents was formed. Rosie also served on an advisory committee for the Central Regional Center of Services for the Deaf Blind Children. In addition, she volunteered time to the March of Dimes, St. Anne’s Church and School, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother.

Rosie loved baking and shared her baked goods with her extended family and neighbors. Everyone loved Rosie’s meatloaf, which she thought was quite funny! She was a prolific letter writer and kept up correspondence with many people until her final years.

Rosie is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Ron) Gardner, Olathe KS; son, Mark, Bismarck; granddaughters, Marie (Thomas) Swanson, Overland Park KS, Carolyn (Hayden) Rinner, Hanover MD and two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Bailey Swanson. She is also survived by her sister, Leona (Bill) Koch, Mandan; brothers, Jack (Marilyn) Reisenauer, Bismarck, Leo (Karen) Reisenauer, Mandan; brother-in-law, Don (Cindy) Horning, Rapid City SD; sisters-in-law, Angie Olson, Selah WA, Ann Reisenauer, Washburn ND, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Rosie in death were her parents, Christ and Rose Reisenauer; husband, Henry; son, James and her brothers, Nick and Jerry.

Memorial contributions may be made to Light of Christ Catholic Schools, 1025 N. 2nd St. Bismarck, ND 58501; or St. Vincent’s Care Center 1021 N. 26th St. Bismarck ND 58501. Please note the name “Rose Mary Horning Memorial” on the memo line.
