Scott was born October 19, 1963 at Homestead AFB, FL to Delores Jean (Calhoun) and Larry Wayne Volkert. His dad was in the Air Force and relocated to Germany when Scott was an infant, so Scott spoke German before learning English from the babysitter. In his younger days, the family did a lot of tent camping. It is not surprising that Scott has two campers parked in his yard today.
His parents retired in Minot, ND, where Scott graduated from Minot High School in 1982. He worked at various restaurants in Minot and Williston before moving to Bismarck to work at The Pizza Factory. It is there where he met Tami, who became his best friend and then his wife. They were married on August 31,1991 and would have celebrated 34 years of marriage this year.
Scott was a salesman at heart and loved to gab with everyone. It was said he could talk to a wall. He sold cars, printing, and advertising before making a career working at The Finder, where he worked for 27 years, retiring in 2023.
Scott was a jokester. He had that “mischievous twinkle” in his eye when he would tease his nieces and nephews. He was always making others laugh with his sarcastic sense of humor.
Scott’s love of all animals caused him to rescue many dogs (and one cat) in his life. They included Ruthie, Abigail, Theodore, and the most recent addition, his retirement buddy, Zoey. Rescued animals are the best pets ever!
Scott also loved volunteering and would take any gig he could get, usually dragging Tami along to help. They worked with the Mandan Progress Organization, Bismarck Downtowners Association, Art in the Park, Buggies-N-Blues, and many other groups.
His favorite place to volunteer and hang out was the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge. Scott was an active, proud, and loyal member for 38 years. He held several positions such as the Hoop Shoot Chairman for 25 years, Exalted Ruler in 2012-2013, and Trustee for 5 years. He really enjoyed having a Bud Light with fellow Elks and friends. He was also a member of the Bismarck Eagles and the Bismarck Moose Club.
Scott’s hobbies included camping, golfing, wood-working, and doing yard work at his dream home. He was an excellent cook and usually had supper ready for Tami when she got home from work. He had unending patience and could fix anything around the house, including vehicles, because he wouldn’t quit until it was done. Scott also loved music, attending many concerts over the years. Scott especially excelled at being the calm to Tami’s panic.
He is survived by his wife Tamra (Tami) and brother-in-law Jay McFarland, both of Bismarck; sister Debra McCulley and brother Larry Volkert II (Sheri), both of Minot;
nieces and nephews Joshua Volkert, Adam Volkert (Brittany), Carrie Killeen, Timothy Schoenwald, Matti Martin (Jared), and Shelby McCulley; great-nieces and nephews Callie Volkert, Sophie Volkert, Elliott Martin, Owen Martin, and Shelby McCulley Jr., along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his 4-legged friend, Zoey.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Thomas, and his mother- and father-in-law, June and Gordon McFarland.
He will be so dearly missed by his family and all who had the honor of knowing him. Scotty, we hope you are getting lots of hugs!
Scott’s family sends a special thank you to the staff at Missouri Slope and Sanford Home Care for their wonderful, patient, and loving care while he was there.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Elks Camp Grassick, Miles of Love Dog Rescue, Kitty City, or Central Dakota Humane Society.
