Sheila Fredrika (Scheurer) Psyrropoulos

June 25, 1949 - August 6, 2025

If you ever left Sheila’s kitchen hungry, you must have been sneaking out. Her mission in life could be summed up simply: “What can I do to help?” Sheila’s legacy was never marked by fanfare or fuss, but by the thousands of quiet, loving ways she cared for those lucky enough to know her. Born on June 25, 1949 to Fred and Mina (Hornberger) Scheurer, Sheila was the only girl stuck in the middle of four boys; Allan, Melvin, Duane, and Gerald. After their mother passed away in 1960, Sheila’s nurturing spirit emerged early as she helped her Papa raise her younger brothers. Life was far from easy on the farm, but Sheila looked back at moments of her childhood with fondness in her remaining days, reminiscing of moments like sliding down the barn roof with Duane and Gerald or their hapless attempt to get Ginger the horse to “giddyup”—an effort that ended with Gerald sliding off the back end.

After graduating from Golden Valley High School in 1967, Sheila moved to Mandan, working at the Lewis and Clark Motel and Restaurant as well as Toman Cleaners. In 1971 she famously showed up at Bonanza ready to work—without an application or interview. No surprise to anyone, she quickly became a standout employee. Guests returned not just for the food, but for Sheila’s warmth and genuine kindness.

Then in 1977 fate handed her a plane ticket around the world. It was on that trip that she met the love of her life, Takis Psyrropoulos. What started as a simple connection made on a beach in Greece quickly blossomed into one of the most endearing and beautiful love stories. Months later, determined to reunite, she flew back to Greece—only to discover he hadn’t received her letters and that she'd spoken to two other men named Takis before finally finding her Takis. From that moment on, it was a love story that spanned 46 years, full of grace, resilience, and quiet joy.

Sheila had a way of showing up exactly when you needed her—offering a plate, a blanket, a ride, or just a listening ear. She was a caregiver in the purest sense: not as a job, but as a calling. If you were in her orbit, you were looked after, fed, and loved. Even in her final week, she was still urging Takis to sit down and eat, and she was always concerned if everyone was comfortable, getting enough sleep, and, of course, eating enough.

Sheila was called home to Heaven on August 6. We take comfort in knowing that Papa, Mama, Allan, Mickey, Melvin, and all the animals that she ever loved were there to welcome her. Sheila's compassionate legacy will carry on and remind us to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service, just as Christ modeled for us.

A celebration of Sheila's life will take place on Saturday, August 23rd at 10:00a at the Golden Valley Community Center with a private burial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers and cards, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Sheila's memory to Coal Country Animal Rescue. Sheila loved animals and spent a large part of her life rescuing and caring for hundreds of God's creatures.
