Stanley Funston

Stanley Dennis Funston age 78, passed away on June 30, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society in Mandan, North Dakota. 

A graveside service will be held at Menoken Cemetery, 1661 185th Street North East, Menoken, North Dakota at 11:00 am on Friday July 5, 2024, officiated by Pastor Martha HarriSon of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on October 5, 1945. Stanley was the son of Neal L and Gertrude Funston. Stanley grew up with four brothers and 3 sisters on a farm 4.5 miles north of Sterling, North Dakota. He loved riding horses, animals in general and the family’s pet raccoon Henry and cocker spaniel Sandy in particular. He attended Sterling public school and Bismarck High School. His first job was as a crew member of his brother Merle’s custom combining business and later worked in construction, often with his brother Clifton. Stanley was disabled in the early 1990s but worked in non-construction jobs for many years and the Ram-kota hotel in Bismarck as shuttle driver and bellman most recently. Stanley was active in Alcoholics Anonymous, the Lutheran Church and the Prayer Room in Bismarck. He was a kind, loyal and giving friend to many. Family was vitally important to Stanley; he was always ready to help and prayed faithfully for us.

Stanley was married to Janet Littke Schadler in 1985. They lived in St. Cloud, Minnesota and later in Bismarck and Lincoln, North Dakota. They divorced in May of 1998. 

Stanley is survived by his brother, Neal Lloyd Funston and wife Patricia; sister, Marie Saunders and husband Dale; brother, Clifton D. Funston and wife Clara; nieces: Dawn Schossow (Marc) Witthaus and their children Nichole Witthaus Scott, Lindsey Witthaus and Michael (Lauren Carson) Witthaus and their child Max. Tracy Funston (Glenn), Swanson and their son Garrett, Kerry Funston, Karen Wiedmeier, Diane Wiedmeier, Cheryl Wiedmeier and her children Ryan, Nicolas, and Benjamin, Kathleen Saunders (Glenn Davis), Kim Funston Repnow, Cynthia Funston (Maynard) Zueger, and Becky Funston (Darius) Hurdle and their children Cory, Tyler, Zachary, Camika, Calaen, Chase and Cierra; nephews: Michael Lee Funston (April Morris) and their children August James, and Daniel, Kevin Funston (Michelle Easly) and their children, Scott Funston (Charlotte Dixon) and their children Scott Jr, Mary, and Emily, Timothy Funston (Monique Towne) and their children Shannon, Rachael and Andrew, Richard Funston, Bill Saunders (Patty Johnson) and their children Daniel, William, Hope and Ruthmarie, Michael Funston (Cindi Kringstad), Gary Funston and Greg (Becky Bothun) Funston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Gertrude Funston; sister, Jean Schossow; brother, Merle Funston; sister, Shirley Wiedmeier, and brother, David Funston; nephews, Mark Schossow, Daniel Funston, Thomas Wiedmeier; and great-nephew, Chase Hurdle.
