Stephen was born on August 20, 1952, to Joseph and Frances (Cook) Schneider in Mandan, ND. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated from Glen Ullin High School in 1970.
After high school, Stephen worked in construction for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1972, serving proudly as a Navy Corpsman. He began boot camp at the Naval Training Center in San Diego and trained at Balboa Naval Hospital. His service took him to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL; MCAS Futenma in Okinawa, Japan; Iwakuni, Japan; Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA; and Naval Air Station North Island in California. He achieved the rank of HM3 (Hospital Corpsman Third Class).
Stephen became a father to two children: Stephanie, born in 1978, and Chris, born four years later. In 1999, he met Laurie (Tibor) Weiand and they later married on May 13, 2000. Through this union, Stephen gained three more children: Amy Weiand, Katie Olson, and Evan Weiand, whom he loved as his own.
A dedicated craftsman, Stephen worked as a mason for 37 years with various companies, most notably Streyle and Fetter Masonry. Even after retirement, he stayed busy with countless side projects and handyman jobs—always lending a hand where it was needed.
Stephen loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping at Lake Tschida with friends and family. He was known for his meticulous nature and love for documenting facts and keeping things organized. He enjoyed playing games and cards such as Spades, Blitz and 500 Rummy—always acting as the scorekeeper and somehow always winning (though you could never quite prove he was cheating!). He also had a passion for antique hunting, often searching for unique treasures like old tools, roller skates, and animal skulls.
Stephen will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of family, and his playful, competitive nature at the card table.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie, children, Stephanie (Brandon) Schantz Glen Ullin ND, and Chris Schneider Denver, CO; stepchildren, Amy Weiand, Bismarck, Katie (Jeff) Olson, Bismarck, and Evan Weiand, Glen Ullin, ND; grandchildren, Caden Schneider (fiancé Kenzie), Brianna Schantz, Jace Schantz, Elliot Schneider, Noah Weiand, Ayden Olson, Benjamyn Olson, Henry Olson, and Harper Olson; sister, Phyllis (Frank) Clemens II, Jamestown, ND; nephew, Frank (Lydia) Clemens III, Fargo, ND; sisters in-law, Celeste (Emil) Vogle, Hebron, ND, Jane (Joe) Schaaf, Hebron, ND, Joan (Tom) Conlon, Hebron, ND, Lisa (Russ) Conlon, Hebron, ND, Stefanie (Gary) Cross, Bismarck, Roseanne (Craig) Ullmann, Pierre, SD, and Gretchen (Kirk) Peterson, Hebron, ND; and brothers in-law, Joseph (Kathryn) Tibor, Bismarck, and John (Debra) Tibor, Mandan.
