Stuart M. Libby, 81, Bismarck, passed away, November 10, 2025 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 17 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Burial will be held 3 p.m. Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services.
Stu was born September 28, 1944, in Portland, Maine, one of five children to Fred M. and Frances B. (Adams) Libby. Stu was raised and educated in the Westbrook area. A Viet Nam era veteran, Stu enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves and transferred to the U.S. Air Force and served from 1962 through 1966 when he was honorably discharged.
Stu married Mikkel Murrey in Wilton, ND in 1964. To this union one son and three daughters were born: Steven, Cristine, Beverly, and Stephanie.
Stu later married Judith (Pfliger) Poffenberger in Bismarck after a very long courtship. With this union came two stepchildren: David Poffenberger and Julie Poffenberger.
Upon completion of his military commitment, he joined Northern States Power Company in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to produce electricity. In 1970, Stu accepted a position with Minnkota Power Cooperative, Inc. at its Milton R. Young Station near Center, ND. He served in many capacities at its generating facility during his 40-plus-year career, retiring in plant manager operations in 2009.
Stu earned an Associate of Applied Science degree from Bismarck State College and a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Mary — graduating Magna Cum Laude.
During his 20-year residency in Center, ND, Stu helped establish ambulance, dental, medical, pharmaceutical, and optometric services in the communities of Center and medical services in Beulah, ND. He served as squad leader for the ambulance service and served on the board of directors for the dental, medical, and optometric services. He was also a volunteer on the Oliver County Rural Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Judith; daughters, Cristine Saccoman, Ramsey, MN, Beverly Cody, Bismarck, Stephanie (Richard) Kopp, Fargo, ND; step-son, David (Stacey) Poffenberger, Bismarck; step-daughter, Julie Poffenberger, Bismarck; grandchildren, Justine, Allison, Elisabeth, Michael, Kristin, Matthew, Chloe, Chanson; sister, Judy (Alan) White, Saco, ME; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jean Kautzman, Arlyce Schulte, Charlene Sampson, all of Center, Claudia (Lyle) Albers, Hannover, Sheryl Pfliger, Bismarck; and Tom Pfliger (Sherrie), Nampa, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.
Stu was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Louise Pfliger; one son, Steven; and three brothers, Gordon, Brian, and Paul Libby.
