Obituary

Susan “Susie” Vaughan Woodward Morrison Carl passed away on June 20, 2026, in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was born on May 8th, 1940, in Bremerton, Washington, where her father, Barclay J. Woodward, III, and mother, Barbara E. Vaughan Woodward (later Garside) were stationed with the Navy. Susie grew up in Duxbury, Massachusetts, active in student clubs including music, sports, theatre, Girls State, and a U.N. Youth pilgrimage. She fondly remembered swimming and sailing in Duxbury Bay.

Susie attended Smith College. While working as a summer au pair in Maine, she met and married lobsterman O. Clifton Morrison, Jr., and they made their home on a salt-water farm in South Blue Hill, Maine. Always industrious, they raised pansies for sale, made holiday wreaths and souvenirs to sell. Susie baked cakes and pies for local restaurants and was active in the Order of the Eastern Star. Susie and Clifton had two sons, John and Angus, before Susie was widowed. Through her college roommate, she was set up on a long-distance blind date with a geology professor, James D. Carl of Potsdam, NY, a widow himself, with two children, Brian and Beth. It was love at first sight. The two families blended into one a few months later, in October 1973, now with four children ages 5, 6, 7, and 8.

They raised a family in Potsdam where they lived for 47 years. Susie was famous for her fresh bread parties, called Bread Blasts, which brought friends, neighbors, colleagues, and students to their home. She was active in Trinity Episcopal Church, taught Sunday school and volunteered. Susie was an expert knitter and taught adult knitting classes at SUNY Potsdam. She was a featured artist at the Traditional Arts in Upstate NY gallery for a number of years, and her mittens, hats, and sweaters were exhibited in shops and on hundreds of hands, heads, and backs across the North Country. Susie loved and supported SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and the Orchestra of Northern New York. She often hosted musicians, attended concerts, opera, and recitals and was known for knitting as she listened.

After Jim died in 2020, Susie lived in Canton, NY, for a few years, then relocated to Bismarck, North Dakota, to be near her son John and his family. From the time she arrived, she was a social force at the Touchmark community. There were no strangers, everyone was greeted in the halls, whether neighbors, staff, or visitors. Susie was 86 years old when she passed and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons John G. (Beth Nodland) Morrison, Bismarck, North Dakota, Angus D. (Kym) Morrison, South Blue Hill, Maine, Brian (Karen) Carl, Potsdam, New York, and daughter Beth (Peter Walker) Carl, Guilford, Vermont. Susie had five grandchildren including Logan and Wyatt Morrison, Alena and Marissa Carl, and Lochlan Morrison. Susie is survived by sister Pashya White of Peterborough, New Hampshire, and brother Michael Woodward, of Hixson, Tennessee.

A memorial service will be held in the fall at Trinity Church and burial will be in the Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam, NY.
