Theodore John Hellman was born on the 4th of July 1938 (his favorite holiday) near Glen Ullin, ND, to John and Mary (Paul) Hellman. Ted was raised and educated in the St. Joseph and Almont area, graduating from Almont High School in 1956. He went on to achieve a teaching degree from Dickinson Teachers College and began teaching elementary school in New Salem. He married Donna Heid on August 28, 1961, and to this union six children were born. Around 1965, they moved to Mandan to continue raising their growing family. In 1968, Ted began his long career as an accountant for the ND Employment Security Bureau (Job Service ND) and continued his employment there for 30 years until his retirement in 1998.
Ted enjoyed sports throughout his life, playing softball, volleyball and golf. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Timberwolves fan. He played hundreds of rounds of golf over the years, always searching for that elusive hole in one.
Ted leaves behind six children and families: Kevin and Mary Hellman, Bismarck, (3 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, and 5 step great-great grandchildren); Kelly and Zonni (Bernstein) Hellman, Westminster, Colorado (Kelly’s son Dillon Bryant and grandson Levi); Kyle and Deborah Hellman, Bismarck (daughters Kamryn and Keera); Kerry and Mike Knowlen, Mandan, (son and daughter-in-law Austin and Ally Knowlen, daughter and son-in-law Atlanta and Taylor Hellman, and great grandson Lennox); Kory and Tania Hellman, Bismarck (daughters Kailey and Karsyn); and Kasey Hellman, St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
