Obituary

Dr. Thomas H. Christianson, age 93, of Bismarck, ND, passed away on October 8, 2026. He was born in Portal, ND, in 1933. The family moved to Forest River, ND, where his father farmed and was a school principal. Thomas attended elementary school near Forest River, and High School in Grand Forks. He graduated from premedical and medical school at University of North Dakota, and the University of Texas in Dallas. He was an Air Force Veteran.

Thomas and Marilyn Gordon-Hanson were married in 1955, and they lived 17 years in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento for Military service, additional surgical training and private practice.

In 1975, Tom and Marilyn returned to Bismarck, ND, where Thomas practiced Orthopedic surgery at the Quain and Ramstad clinic, and Bismarck Hospital/ Medcenter One until retirement in 1993. He then worked, Locum Tenens at Ft. Yates, ND, and in Texas. He also spent many years part-time with the Social Security Disability office in Bismarck, ND.

Volunteer medical service was in Mexico, Dominican Republic and on St. Lucia Island. He enjoyed playing tennis and gardening.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Paul) Zent, of Bismarck; son, Peter Christianson of San Jose, California; sister, Claire (Edward) Hirshfield of Cupertino, California; grandsons, Tyler (Tia) Zent of Bismarck and Trey (Emily) Zent, of Grand Forks; and two great-grandchildren, Tenley and Asher.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, who passed away July 5, 2025; brother, Dr. Lawrence G. Christianson of Silver Springs, MD; and parents: Lawrence A. and Margurite Christianson of Forest River, ND.

Thomas will have burial services at a later date at the ND Veteran’s Cemetery in Mandan ND.
