Todd was born on April 1, 1960, to Victor and Orpha (Opdahl) Steinwand, the third of five siblings. Todd had an “All-American” childhood growing up in Ellendale, North Dakota. He had a Grit paper route at eight-years-old, played the trumpet in the school band, sang in the choir, and participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Todd graduated from Ellendale High School in 1978 and then attended Jamestown College (now the University of Jamestown). While there, he was the quarterback of the football team, ran track, and was voted Homecoming King before graduating with a double major in 1982.

Todd married Shelly Imhoff in 1987, and together they shared 38 wonderful years together. They especially enjoyed traveling, cruising on their pontoon, and spending time with friends. Todd was a remarkable father to their three children. Todd ensured he was at almost every sporting event, music concert, or activity his kids (and later, grandkids) were involved in. Before a big game or track meet, his children would find a handwritten note of encouragement from their dad, with the assurance he’d be there cheering them on.

Todd began his banking career as a trust officer at First Northwestern Trust company in 1982. Finding his passion for helping his community through banking, Todd’s career at Wells Fargo spanned 33 years where he held nearly every position except teller. After retiring from Wells Fargo in 2015, Todd became the Chief Business Development Officer, and later the President/CEO of the Bank of North Dakota in 2021. Todd retired from BND in 2024 and was excited to fill his free time with grandkids, golf, and simply enjoying life side by side with Shelly. Being “Papa” to his five grandchildren, hitting two holes-in-one, and simple joys with his family were among his favorite memories.

Service and generosity were always priorities for Todd. No matter where he was in life, Todd found ways to meet community needs and improve the lives of others. He gave relentlessly and led selflessly through volunteering and serving on numerous boards and committees. He especially enjoyed his 21 years volunteering at the ND State Track Meet. He has served as chair of the North Dakota Bankers Association, the Protect Our Turf Campaign to renovate the MDU Resources Community Bowl, and the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce. Todd continued to actively serve on the Boards of Directors of the Tom and Frances Leach Foundation, the Energy and Environmental Research Center Foundation, and as the Chairman of the University of Jamestown Board of Trustees until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

Todd lived a life that was focused on faith, family, positivity, and gratitude. He participated in the Men of Oats Bible study for over 35 years, loved reading his devotionals, and listened to Christian music daily. While ALS changed Todd’s body, it never changed who and whose Todd was. Todd remained steadfast in his faith and rooted in positivity; unwavering in his belief of Heaven and love for his family.

He will forever be cherished by his wife Shelly, his children Jill (Ben) Kringstad and their children Ella, Avery, and Brody Kringstad; Jessica (Mitchell) Smette; and Andrew (Maggie) Steinwand, and their children, Jettson, and Julian Steinwand; sisters Vicci Pederson, Jennifer (Pat) Hezmall, and Allison (Mark) VanDyk, brother Ned (Kelly) Steinwand; uncle Carl Opdahl; mother-in-law, Adeline Imhoff; sister-in-law, Sandra (Cliffton) Levorsen; as well as many nieces, nephews, colleagues, and friends. For us who loved him, Todd didn’t just represent the best of us - he was the best of us. Simply knowing Todd has made us better.

Todd is welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Victor and Orpha Steinwand, and father-in-law, Albert Imhoff.

In the spirit of Todd’s legacy of giving, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Todd’s beloved University of Jamestown, specifically the Todd and Shelly Steinwand Scholarship (6082 College Lane, Jamestown, ND 58405).
