Obituary

Valentine (Val) Vetter passed away peacefully on March 18th, 2026 at his home at Edgewood Village, Bismarck N.D., surrounded by family, at the age of 91. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 23rd, 2026 at Church of St. Anne’s, 1321 Braman Ave, Bismarck, ND. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck, N.D.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 22nd, 2026 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. with a Catholic Rosary at 7:30 p.m. and with a vigil to follow at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck, N.D.

Valentine was born on April 4th, 1934 in Emmons County, to Joseph and Veronica (Wangler) Vetter, the 8th of 13 children. He grew up on the family farm east of Linton, N.D. He attended school through 8th grade and then attended Barber College in June of 1955 at Fargo, N.D. Valentine married Viola Kraft on January 8th, 1957 in Strasburg, N.D. at St.Peter & Paul Catholic Church. They were married for 69 years until his death. From this union they were blessed with 5 children.

Val worked 18 years as a Barber starting in Linton, then Gackle and lastly in Bismarck N.D. where he eventually became the proud owner of Northbrook Barber Shop in 1963, located in the Northbrook Mall, Bismarck. He took great pride in being able to give his grandchildren their first haircuts! In 1973 he transitioned his career into floor covering (Val’s Floor Covering) until his retirement. Val had a strong work ethic which he passed onto his children. There were always many tasks & projects to do, he could build or fix anything. He always enjoyed helping his children with any projects they had going on. He also provided assistance to his wife, Viola with her Shaklee business.

Val was an active member of Knights of Columbus earning a Lifetime Membership, the Eagles Club, earning his 65 yr. pin and a Charter Member of St. Annes Parish where he served as an usher for many years. He was devoted to his faith and family.

Val & Vi welcomed many family members and friends into their home, where numerous meals & laughs were shared. Val cherished celebrating his family heritage at the 4th of July celebrations held annually at Vetterville, east of Linton, N.D. He made the food coolers & some of the benches used for the 4th of July gatherings & provided popcorn for the annual 3rd of July dance for the Vetter Family. He enjoyed music, dancing, family gatherings, ice cream and anything chocolate.

Blessed to have shared his life and survived by, are his wife Viola, Bismarck, Children: Viann (Jim) Doll, Bismarck; Vern (Amy) Vetter, Bismarck; Vance (Toni) Vetter, Bismarck; Virgil (Gretchen) Vetter, Bismarck; Daughter-in-law Judy Vetter-Pfeifer (Marvin), Bismarck. 13 Grandchildren: Clayton, Scott & Mitchell Vetter, Sarah Barefield, Brook & Bryce Doll, Crystal Morrell, Liz Sanda, Katin & Emma Vetter, Jordan Aberle, Claire & Logan Vetter. 19 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. Siblings: Adam (Agnes) Vetter, Joe Vetter, Ben (Delphine) Vetter, Sister-in-law Celia Vetter, Leo (Bernie) Vetter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Veronica (Wangler) Vetter, his son Valery Joe Vetter, his siblings: Wendelin (Katie) Vetter, Anna Mary (Frank) Fettig, Elizabeth (Marcus) Wald, John (Mary) Vetter, Catherine (Clemens) Huber, August (Loretta) Vetter, Christine (Clemens Gross & Tony Sperle), Tony Vetter & sister-in-law Mary Vetter.

Following the graveside service, the family will join you for lunch & fellowship at the Eagles Club, Bismarck, N.D.
