He married his High School sweetheart, Marlene Kamrath, in 1958. The first eight months of their marriage, they moved 13 times and lived in an itty-bitty trailer. Their romance lasted 64 ½ years and were blessed with four wonderful children, twins Russ and Rhonda, Steve, Lana Beth, and when the spouses came along we had the delightful eight, which grew into 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Vern thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He lived for and attended countless sporting activities, watching his family participate. While attending these sporting activities, he was known for his love of burnt hotdogs, orange pop and snicker bars.
Vern and his family were long time members of the Presbyterian Church in Steele, He will be remembered for ringing the bell every Sunday morning before the service. Vern was very active throughout the community, always willing to contribute when the need arose.
