Warren Bien,80, of Bismarck, passed away on July 28, 2026

A Funeral service will be held at 10:30am, on Thursday, August 6, at McCabe United Methodist Church, 1030 N 6th St, Bismarck, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5-7pm, on Wednesday, August 5, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck. A prayer service will begin at 7pm.

Burial will be held at 1pm at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Warren Milo Bien was born on September 19, 1945, in Fargo, ND to Oscar and Dorothea (Schulz) Bien. He grew up near Shoreham, outside of Detroit Lakes, MN, alongside his brother and eight sisters. Warren attended District 20 Country School before graduating from Detroit Lakes High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969.

Warren was once married to Joann Ryder, and together they welcomed two sons, John Warren and Jason David.

While working in construction, Warren met the love of his life, Kathleen Messmer. They were married on October 27, 1979, in Kensal, ND, and made their home in Bismarck, where they built a wonderful life together. They shared a love of adventure, spending countless hours riding motorcycles, camping in both tents and their fifth-wheel with family and friends, horseback riding, and taking great pride in caring for their yard and driveway.

A proud life member of AMVETS Post 9 in Bismarck, Warren found great honor in serving as a member of the Post 9 Honor Guard.

Following his retirement from truck driving, Warren enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time in the country, especially restoring 1972–1979 Ford pickups. Known for his ingenuity, he even designed and installed power steering systems on many of those older trucks. In his later years, he found enjoyment tinkering with and repairing lawn mowers.

Above all else, Warren cherished his family. His grandchildren were among his greatest joys, and some of his happiest memories were the weekends he spent with his older grandchildren when they were young.

Warren is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen; his sons, John (Melissa) Bien of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jason (Jessica) Bien of Bismarck, ND; his grandchildren, Kelsey Bedard, Tiffany Bien, Xavier Bedard, Ben Bien, and Natalie Bien; his sisters, Evonne Meyhoff of Shakopee, MN, Careadell Richter of Detroit Lakes, MN, Janet (Paul) Cincush of Detroit Lakes, MN, Ranae Sexton of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Corrine Munson of Bloomington, MN; sister-in-law, Kathy Bien, Bismarck, ND; his fury friends, Flopper, Bella, and Molly along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Dorothea Bien; his brothers, Arlo and Donald; and his sisters, Karen Maynard and Diane Rennie.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to organizations that were part of Warren’s life.
