Wilma was born on February 22, 1934, in Wishek, North Dakota. She was one of twelve children. She was baptized at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. She attended a country school near her home through eighth grade and completed one more grade after that. From 1952 to 1955 she helped care for her ailing father until he passed on June 2, 1955. On October 25, 1955, she married Wilbert “Willie” Speidel. They lived on a farm near Zeeland until March 1959 and then moved to Bismarck.
They had six children, two of whom died as infants. On December 1, 1968, Wilbert died, leaving Wilma a widow with four children: Jerry, Owen, Vanessa, and Renee.
Wilma was extremely involved in her young children’s lives. She was a cub scout den mother for the boys and a brownie leader for the girls. She loved children and was daycare provider for Daniel Halverson as a young child. And after approximately 60 years they still had a loving relationship.
She loved gardening, having large vegetable gardens in her back yard and would can and pickle her crops. She was a bargain shopper and loved going to rummage sales and having them too. She loved jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She played the piano by ear. In her later years she could always be found playing pinocle and bingo.
As she grew older, she loved hanging out with her grandchildren and even in her twilight years she lit up when the great grandchildren would come for a visit.
Wilma worked at the Town House Motor Inn cleaning rooms until she got a job at MedCenter One in the dietary department. She retired from there in 1999.
Wilma is survived by her four children, Jerry (Donna) Speidel, Owen Speidel, Vanessa (Russ) Kroshus, and Renee Speidel, all of Bismarck.
Wilma is survived by 10 grandchildren, Tonya (Trev) White, Bismarck, Kevin, (Shelby) Speidel, Bismarck, Ian (Hailee) Kroshus, Sandwich, MA, Whitney (Noah) Fliginger, Bismarck, Cole (Hallie) Kroshus, Missoula, MT, Marriah Potter, Bismarck, Tayler Speidel-Wetzsteon, Missoula, MT, Jordan (Lewis) Green, Bismarck, Colin Speidel-Wetzsteon, Bismarck, and Madison Speidel, Scottsdale, AZ.
