Thelma Hettervig

May 17, 1922 — August 10, 2022

Thelma Mae Hettervig (Martinson), 100 years old, passed away on August 10th, 2022, with her family by her side in Bismarck, ND.

A funeral service at 3:00pm, Tuesday, August 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 102 Butte Ave, Center, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:00pm, Monday, August 15 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E. Divide Ave and will continue one hour before the service starts on Tuesday.

She was born May 17th, 1922, on the home farm near Derrick (Hampden), ND to Orville and Therese Martinson.  Thelma grew up on the farm and helped during harvest, feeding workers using aluminum plates.  During the war, Japanese men from Ft. Totten worked to help replace the local men who were off to fight.

Thelma was married to Carl Eliason, who passed away shortly after WWII, then later to Arlen Hettervig in 1955. Carl and Thelma had one daughter, Judy. Arlen and Thelma had two daughters, Gail and Lisa and one son, Tom.

Thelma, with her daughter Judy went off to California to help in manufacturing for the war and later, after graduating from Mayville Normal School, she taught at a single room schoolhouse near Buxton, Thelma taught Sunday School, as well as temporary teacher at Center.

Arlen and Thelma lived in Buxton, moved to Grand Forks and Center. Later she moved to Fargo and then to Bismarck. She was an active member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Center. 

Thelma loved painting, traveling and family. She loved music and played the guitar and piano by ear.  Her favorite music was bluegrass and country. She loved and was loved by her family and friends.

Thelma is survived by her sister Shirly Gilbraith; daughter, Gail (Jim) Schneider, son, Tom (Sheri) Hettervig and daughter, Lisa Hettervig-Reichenberg; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Eliason and Arlen Hettervig; parents; siblings, Clara, Ollie, Laurel, Doris and Curtis; and daughter, Judy.
